Born and raised an Ohio farm girl, she was a simple but friendly, outgoing person, who genuinely cared for people whether she knew them or not, and formed a few life-long friendships, which lasted even after she moved from Ohio to Indiana with her husband James V. Schwing. They met in Columbus,Ohio, she working as a secretary in an insurance office; he working as a special agent in insurance. They married and lived in Columbus, Ohio. Dad took a job transfer to Indianapolis,Indiana, and they moved to a log cabin owned by Horace Johnson between Avon and Brownsburg. On 7 Dec 1961, I came along and in June 1964 we moved to Rodney Street in Brownsburg, Indiana. Mom died 14 May 1976, of cirrhosis of the liver and emphesyma caused by her near life-long use of cigarettes and alcohol. She taught me how to cook, clean, do laundry, how to settle arguments by discussion instead of fighting, and along with Dad, to know God and right from wrong and the difference between wants and needs. She also started my interest in plants and animals, particularly bird watching in our backyard, vegetable gardening, and planting flowers.
She is also the one (along with Dad!) who taught me that friends are family too, even though both my parents had siblings, they both bonded to certain people as if they had been real brothers and sisters with whom they grew up in the best sense of the words brother and sister.
