Adrian Merizon (generally spelled Adriaan prior to immigrating) was born on November 16, 1838 in Colijnsplaat, Zeeland, Netherlands. He was the son of Marinus Merizon (1812-1901) and Adriana Dronkers (1812-1899). He had 14 siblings of which 9 died as babies and all the other 5 lived their lives in the Netherlands. He was the only one to immigrate. During the time he lived in the Netherlands his occupation was that of a seaman or skipper of a boat or barge in the waterways of Zeeland Province. In the Province of Zeeland, he was commonly known by the nick-name "The Skipper". He owned and operated a cargo fright ship named "Levina". He transferred cargo between Colijnsplaat and Rotterdam. Mostly farm produce from the farming community. He married Levina Breas on August 22, 1861 and they had thirteen children, however four died at a very young age. The family immigrated with nine children. The first names of the children are as follows: Adriana, Elizabeth, Nellie, Lena, Adrian, Mary, Marinus, Jasper, and Janna. The family immigrated to the USA in 1888 and settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He passed away on March 24, 1923 at the age of 85.
