MARTHA G. COOLEY

WAYNESBORO - Martha Goldsborough Cooley of Waynesboro died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, after a brief illness.

She was born Martha Winder Goldsborough in Baltimore on July 28, 1933, the daughter of Martha Winder Goldsborough and Heath Dodge Goldsborough. She was the granddaughter of Judge and Mrs. Thomas Alan Goldsborough of Denton, Md., and Dr. and Mrs. Martin Worthington Goldsborough of Cambridge, Md.

Martha was raised in Severna Park, Md., and graduated from Severna Park High School before attending Washington College and then the University of Maryland, where she received a bachelor of arts degree and was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. After college she moved to Washington, D.C., where she met and became engaged to US Navy Lt. Talmage Newman Cooley of Harrisonburg. They were married at St. Anne's Church in Annapolis, Md., on May 11, 1957. After Martha's husband graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in 1960, the couple relocated to Waynesboro, which would be their home until the present.

Martha raised three children in Waynesboro and for many years was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, the Waynesboro Garden Club and the Shenandoah Valley Arts Center. In 1979, Martha enrolled at the University of Virginia School of Education and received a master's degree in special education. She subsequently taught in the Augusta County School system for 14 years, specializing in helping students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

Upon her retirement from teaching, she and her husband studied painting at the Beverly Street Studio in Staunton, participating in gallery shows and making annual group trips to paint in France and Italy. Martha and Talmage were blessed with a remarkable band of cherished friends who stayed in close contact for over 50 years, supporting each other without fail and gathering often for joyous celebrations and vacation adventures.

Martha's greatest happiness was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her loving spirit, encouragement and patience were great inspirations to her family and everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, retired Augusta County District Court Judge Talmage Newman Cooley; her brother, Nicholas Goldsborough of Annapolis, Md.; her three children, Talmage Newman Cooley Jr., of Brooklyn, N.Y.; John Goldsborough Cooley of Culpeper and Heath Cooley Friedman of Lawrenceville, N.J.; as well as seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at St. John's Episcopal Church, with a reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, gifts to the Shenandoah Valley Arts Center (www.svacart.com) would be greatly appreciated.
