After years in state government, Conrad was named vice president of corporate affairs and spokesman for Melvin Simon & Associates in 1979. Throughout the 1980s, he played a major role in establishing Indianapolis as an amateur sports center and in redeveloping downtown. Conrad, a Democrat, served two terms as Indiana secretary of state, from 1970 to 1978 . The Indiana University School of Law graduate got his start in politics managing Birch Bayh's Washington staff. Conrad served as an adviser to city officials and was active in numerous civic organizations.
