Lorenz Dennis Mahrer was born in Forman, Sargent Co., ND on 24 Jun 1911 to Matthew and Anna (Kramer) Mahrer. He grew up and attended school in Forman-Milnor area and graduated from the high school there.
Lorenz attended Valley City State Teachers College for 2 years and was married to Verna Selma Martinson on 24 May 1940 at St. Marys Catholic Church in Valley City, ND. They lived in Edgeley, ND for 7 yrs. where Lorenz managed a Red Owl Store until 1947 when the family moved to Park River ND. He operated a Fairway Grocery store with Kermit Anderson for 6 mos., and then with John Bures as a partner until 1951 when he went on his own with Red Owl, which he and Verna operated until retirement in 1981. Lorenz was a civic minded gentleman who stayed active in business and civic organizations his entire adult life and received awards for his efforts as Grocer of the Year. He was an astute business man and very successful. He was also an accomplished musician and played second violin with the Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra. He also sang with the Valley Chordsmen of Grand Forks.
Lorenz died 8 Dec 1995 in Park River, ND. He was buried at Saint Catherines Cemetery in Valley City, ND. He had been a member of St. Marys Catholic Church.
He is was survived by his beloved wife, Verna, Park River, ND; daughters, Nancy Jo (Orvin) Espelien, Park River, Lu Ann (Mark) Dudgeon, East Grand Forks, MN; sons: David Lee (Mary Beth) Mahrer of Lexington, SC, Alan Lorenz (Nancy) Mahrer of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Michael Dennis (Ginny) Mahrer, Park River, 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; as well as two sisters: Agnes Cagley and Clara Mahrer, both of Alexandria, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Henry, Frank, Ray, and Leo; sister: Florentine and great-grandson, Cody Espelien.
