Richard William McCornack, 88, of Lexington, husband of Ruth Lucille McCornack, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at the St. Joseph Hospital.

Born Dec. 2, 1920, in Oak Park, Ill., he was the son of the late Roy Andrew and Nora Miller McCornack. He graduated from California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, Calif., in 1942 and worked for two years as an engineer at Westinghouse Electric. He served as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in World War II, on the heavy cruiser USS Tuscaloosa from 1944 to 1946. Following his service, he was a production engineering manager for Elgin Watch Company. In 1958, he and his family moved to Lexington when he took a position with IBM as a development engineer. He held a number of positions in engineering and management. He retired in 1983 as an area manager in the IBM development laboratory. After retirement, he was an active student in the Donovan Scholar Program at the University of Kentucky. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon, trustee and elder.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, he is survived by a son, Bill (Nicole) McCornack, Versailles; a daughter, Lois (John) Noval; and two granddaughters, Kathryn and Ashley Noval.

A private family graveside service will be held in Elgin, Ill.
