Raymond Lee Blackwell, Sr., of Spartanburg, SC, died peacefully at his home on Monday, August 29, 2005, surrounded by his family.

A native of Glendale, he was the son of the late P. L. Blackwell and Nellie (Reeves) Blackwell.

He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, having served as a civil service examiner, an accounting technician, and finance clerk at Pinewood Station B. After his retirement he worked at Bank of America for ten years.

He was secretary of the APWU and a member of the YMCA. He was a member of River Hills Baptist Church and a former member of Park Hills Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, President of his Sunday School Class, an usher, and a member of the finance committee.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and served 30 years in the Naval Reserves, retiring as Chief Petty Officer.

Survivors include his wife, Marie (Hullett) Blackwell; three sons, Raymond Lee Blackwell, Jr. (Nancy) of Spartanburg, Joseph M. Blackwell (Carolyn) of Boiling Springs, and Craig Blackwell (Libby) of Spartanburg; a sister, Frances Stroud of Spartanburg; a granddaughter, Wendy Blackwell, and a grandson, Bryan Blackwell, both of Boiling Springs.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Paul, Bo, and Buddy Blackwell.

Visitation was 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at River Hills Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. C. Kent Smith and the Rev. Jack Weaver. Entombment was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum.

Pallbearers were John Hullett, Kate Hullett, Donald Hullett, Earl Stroud, James Bearden, Elzie Lawter, Bruce Thomas and Sam Forry.

Honorary Escort was Church Deacons and members of the Outreach Sunday School Class of River Hills Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials could be made to River Hills Baptist Church Building Fund, 5762 Reidville Road, Moore, SC 29369.
