In 1860, he was a farmer living in Newberry Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 4" tall with dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Yocumtown, York County, February 20, 1865, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg March 8 as a private with Co. K, 192nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 24, 1865.

He married Rebecca Hess and fathered Harry (b. @1867), William (b. @1869), Margaret A. (b. 05/13/71 - married an Arnold), Jennie (b. @1874), Alice (b. @1875 - married a Boden), Carrie (b. 02/05/78 - married Howard Kimmel), and Edgar (b. 01/04/86). In 1890, he lived in Camp Hill, Cumberland County, and died in nearby Lemoyne from "chronic interstitial nephritis" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor.
