Alexander Birnie was born in 1861, the first child of William Birnie and Mary Watson and he arrived in the United States from Scotland with his parents and three siblings on July 13th, 1869. The family moved to St. Petersburg, Clarion County, PA after the birth of his sister, Susie A.G. Birnie, in Manhattan, NY on March 16th, 1870, presumably to participate in the worlds first oil boom.

Alexander married Alice Adella Williamson from S. Mahoning, Indiana County, PA on July 10th, 1881. After marrying they lived in Pittsburgh and Sharpsburg, PA. They had three daughters, Mary Zoe Olene, Twila Leila and Audrey Anida. Alexander's occupation is listed in the 1900 US Census as Machinist, in the 1910 US Census as Machinist at a pipe mill and in the 1920 US Census as a foreman at a pipe mill.

Adella died on December 9th, 1936, about three years before Alex. Both Alex and Adella are buried at Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh.
