Crown Point Girl, 14, Is Lake Victim

CHESTERTON, July 28 — The body of a 14-year-old Crown Point girl, who was drowned Sunday, was recovered in Lake Michigan off the Dune's Park shore late Wednesday afternoon by members of the U.S. Coast Guard from Michigan City.

She was Dorothy Bice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bice, Crown Point, who had drowned Sunday near Miller in Lake county. Her body was spotted floating on the surface about two miles offshore by a LaPorte couple while they were yachting.

The girl, swimming in an unprotected area at Carr's beach, Lake county, during a church picnic Sunday, reportedly had been pulled under the water by a heavy undertow. Three girl companions with her in shoulder-deep water managed to reach shore.

Hear Girl Pray

The girls said they heard Dorothy cry. "God help me," before she disappeared.

Mrs. George Collins, RFD 3, LaPorte, sailing with her husband aboard his yacht, saw the body in the water Wednesday afternoon. The Collins hailed a passing eastbound boat which notified the Coast Guard in Michigan City.

Coast Guardsmen Thomas Barnes and John Hogan came to the scene and recovered the body at 4 p. m. about two miles off shore. The girl was identified by a red and white candy-stripe swimming suit she was wearing.

Body was taken to Mernam Funeral home, Crown Point, where services will be held Friday Burial will be in Maplewood cemetery, Crown Point.
