Col. (Retired) Herbert "Herb" Alex Rountree Sr. born May 14, 1932, in Wildsville, La., departed this life on Aug. 2, 2005. During his military career, Herb served with distinction at all levels, from battery/company level to the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The medals he earned included the Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal and the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster and campaign ribbons for service in Vietnam, all attest to the quality of his service. Herb served Prince William County in several capacities. He was a member of the Human Rights Committee that wrote the rules, guidelines and operational procedures for the Human Rights Commission. Herb served for more than four years on the Alternative Sentencing Board, which determined the disposition of non-violent individuals who had been convicted in Prince William County courts. He served as operations officer for Project Mend-A-House where he was actively involved in the repair and renovation of housing for the aging and disabled citizens of Prince William County. He served in this capacity until he became ill. He was past Commander of the American Legion Post 114 in Manassas, a life member of the NAACP, past president of the Dale City Lions Club, he served in several offices in the Fellowship Club and its spin-off, the Investment Club, and was past treasurer of the Prince William Democratic Committee. He leaves to cherish the memories, his wife, Dr. Helen G. Rountree; five children, Maj. Gen. (Retired) Gregory A. Rountree of Salem, N.H., Dr. Harlan A. Rountree of Lynnwood, Wash., Dr. Verdi O. Lethermon of Houston, Texas, Loyonne Y. Milton of Rhoadsville, Herbert "Alex" Rountree Jr. of Austin, Texas, and Tiffany N. Milton, whom he lovingly deemed his daughter. He is survived by a sister, Willie Rhea White of Wildesville, La.; two brothers, Henry B. of College Park, Ga., and Charles C., Sr. of Huntsville, Ala.; five sisters-in-law, Anne Rountree, Deborah Rountree, Joan Graves, Barbara Black and Joyce Kinnard; a brother-in-law, Ernest P. White; a son-in-law, Walter Lethermon; and a daughter-in-law, Regina Rountree; ten grandchildren, Derek Sterns, Jua Rountree, Jamison Rountree, Aaron Rountree, Chantale Milton, Karesse Lethermon, Whitney Milton, Darrell Milton, Kardell and Kameron Lethermon; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Friends will be received 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8, at Ames Funeral Home, 8914 Quarry Road, Manassas, and 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 18410 Chapel Drive, Triangle, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m., with Dr. Alfred Jones Jr., Pastor. Interment with full military honors at 1 p.m. Oct. 19, at Arlington National Cemetery. Friends are requested to meet at 12:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.
