Gladys Brewer

Ruby Gladys Brewer Ramsey, South McCord Road, Ponca City, died peacefully at home August 29th at 8 p.m., with her family in attendance.

She was the eldest of 9 children born to Willie and Bertha Ballentine Brewer April 5, 1916 at Onia, Arkansas. She received her education at 56, Arkansas, then married Ulysses Otto Ramsey of Big Flat Arkansas in October 1934 and eventually moved to Ponca City. Always an addict to hard work she began work for Conoco in BO&S where she continued until retiring in 1978 after 27 years.

Gladys taught Sunday School for all of her adult life, often teaching multiple generations of the same family. A life long Missionary Baptist, she participated in many aspects of the work of the church. She represented her church, Harmony Missionary Baptist, in state and national offices of the Ladies Auxiliary. She would schedule her vacation time to allow her to attend national meetings often from coast to coast and also for VBS at home.

She was a charter member of HMBC and the two churches preceding it which are now closed.

A very special event in her life occurred in 1985 when she was able to travel with a Baptist group including family members to the Holy Land where she felt blessed to witness the scenes she had portrayed to her students for so many years.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two children, Donna Sue, 6 years old and son, Randy Curtis Ramsey. Also one brother Coy Brewer of Newkirk and four sisters, Letha Hicks of Ponca City, Goldie Martin and Retha Moore, both of Oklahoma City and an infant sister, Madgie.

Gladys is survived by one daughter, Shirley Alexander and one son, William Karrol Ramsey, 19 great grandchildren and 11 great, great grandchildren.

She will be greatly missed by all who know her, especially her large family and many grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11a.m. on Tuesday, September 3rd, at Harmony Baptist Church in Ponca City. Her service will be conducted by her grandson Todd Alexander, Pastor of Marshall Drive Baptist Church of Grand Prairie, Texas and Dr. D.R. Baker of HMBC. Arrangements are under the direction of the Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.

Pall Bearers are great grandsons, Caleb, Thomas, and Cole Alexander, Matthew Powelson, Jaden and Micah Zaragoza. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Steve Ready, Jim Aldrich, and John Powelson.
