Virginia "Jane" Dougherty, 77, of Christoval, Texas, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, following an illness. Jane was born to O.A. and Mary Juanita Solomon on Dec. 9, 1935, in Crowell, Texas, and grew up in Buena Park, Calif.

Jane moved to Texas when she was 18 and helped her family establish "Nita's Cafe" in Christoval. She was married to John Dougherty of Gainesville, Texas, and they were expecting their 60th wedding anniversary September 2013. Jane's parents; and brother Sam Solomon preceded her in death. Jane's memory is cherished by her husband; son and daughter-in-law Lynn and Mary Dougherty from Christoval; and daughter Joy Chandler from Waxahachie, Texas. She has a loving memory of a great-uncle, Carl Duncan of San Angelo; six grandchildren, Rani Mason, Justin (wife Stacey) Dougherty, Ashley (husband Roy) Bishop, Kate Chandler, Candace (husband Jeremy) Allen and Cameron Chandler; and nine great-grandchildren, Jace, Zayden, Madilyn, Madeline, Jacob, Mariah, Hailey, Mackenzie and Cason. Jane also had nieces and nephews that she holds dear to her heart.

Jane dedicated her life to helping others, loved animals and enjoyed cooking. She would spend her time at Dan and Cathy Brown's Hummer House in Christoval where she shared these passions by cooking for guests and caring for the hummingbirds. There is not a single person whose life Jane did not touch with great admiration and affection. She will be missed by many dear friends and relatives.

Visitation will be all day, Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at the funeral home, with family present from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, in Old Christoval Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Hospice of San Angelo.
