Mr. Mattson lived a rich, full life beginning with his birth in 1943 to Harriett and Walter Mattson in Biwabik. The oldest of four children, he maintained a close and loving relationship with his parents and siblings throughout his life. He enjoyed competitive sports during his early years, winning recognition for his basketball and track achievements while attending Embarrass High School.

Following his high school graduation in 1961, he joined the U.S. Army in 1964. He was stationed in Fort Lee, Va., after basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. It was while stationed at Fort Lee that he met and married Diane. His active duty service was followed by two years in the U.S, Army Reserves in Ely. He was honorably discharged from the Army Dec. 1, 1970.

Mr. Mattson actively pursued a degree in accounting and attended both Winona State University in Winona, Minn., and Richard Bland College in Petersburg, Va. while working full time to provide for his growing family. He joined the federal Bureau of Prisons in 1972 in Petersburg, where he was able to use his accounting knowledge and training. His 23-year career with the bureau took him and his family to assignments in Oxford, Wis., Durham, N.C., Sandstone, Minn., Talladega, Ala., Duluth, Minn., Rochester Minn., Dublin Calif., and Chicago, Ill. He retired from the Bureau of Prisons in May 1995.

Mr. Mattson developed a passion for golf which he enjoyed every chance he could with his son, Jeff, and close friends. His crowning achievement in golf was the hole-in-one he scored in July 2007, in Rochester.
In addition to golf, he was a vocal and enthusiastic fan of televised football and basketball. He loved shopping for cars, trips to Laughlin, Nev., with friends, and annual trips with his family to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
