James, a terrified teenage boy, was sentenced to death by firing squad. The charge was desertion and the orders were given by Nathan Bedford Forrest. James was shot and buried in a shallow grave where he fell along with Reuben Hamilton. Thier bodies were later removed to the city cemetery. The boys told the minister that they had not signed up to fight but were taken by force.. they only wanted to go home.
