He graduated from Peshtigo High School in 1955.
On Sept. 17, 1960, he married the former Patricia McDermott at St. Wenceslaus Church in Klondike and later they became members of St. Mary's Church in Peshtigo. In 1954, Joseph joined the Marinette National Guard and in 1961, his group was called into active duty during the Berlin crisis. He held the rank of E5 and was a platoon leader.
Joseph was a truck driver for 40 years and from 1986-1996, owned and operated the Stephenson Motel in Stephenson, MI. He loved doing stone work and built many wishing wells, including the one he donated to the Peshtigo Fire Museum and also the highway sign for the Precious Blood Church in Stephenson, Michigan.
Joseph is survived by his wife Patricia;
two sons: Joseph P. (Sandy) of Peshtigo, WI and Travis of Marinette, WI;
four daughters: Sara (Tom) VanBeek, Lisa (Bill) Drees and Dona Drika, all of Peshtigo, WI; Tina (Kevin) Ahrens of Alpharetta, Georgia; 12 grandchildren;
four brothers: Harry, Tom (Helen), James (Shawn), all of Peshtigo, WI and Bill (Sue) of Porterfield, WI;
one sister Anne (Jim) of Anchorage, Alaska;
sisters-in-law Louise Bayer of Peshtigo, WI and Janet (Jim) Belongia of Oconto, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
his in-laws John and Esther McDermott;
a brother Mike Bayer;
sister-in-law Maggie Bayer and brother-in-law John McDermott.
Funeral services held at St. Mary's Catholic Church with full military honors. Burial in Riverside Cemetery, Peshtigo, WI.
