Elgie Byrd Parnell, 77, of Mount Gilead, passed away Sunday night, February 26, 2012 at Stanly Manor in Albemarle.
Mrs. Parnell was born August 28, 1934 in Montgomery County to the late Titus Alexander and Viola Smith Byrd. She was a retired cafeteria assistant of Montgomery County Public Schools and was a member of Wadeville Baptist Church, where she was a member of the WMU. She was known for her wonderful chocolate pies!
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Parnell; two brothers, Harold Byrd and Bunkie Byrd; one sister, Geraldine Lee and one grandson, Derek Leroy Parnell.
She is survived by sons, Edgar Parnell and wife Ruby of Mount Gilead, Steve Parnell of Troy, Rex Parnell and wife Lynn of Mount Gilead, Brian Parnell and fiancée Kristen Landon of Conway, N.C., Bruce Parnell and wife Jennie of Richfield, and daughter Beth McKenzie and husband Lee of Troy. Also surviving are brothers, Buddy Byrd, Alton Byrd, Johnny Byrd and sister Joann Blue. She was grandmother to 14 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
