Mary was born on a family trip to Scotland a few years after her family had emigrated to Canada. It was during WWII, the Lusitania had been sunk by the Germans, no passenger ships were traveling to North America, so the family stayed in Scotland until it was safe. Mary spent her early years in Montreal, and as young children do, she picked up the language easily and translated French to English for her parents.
