Mary Margaret Kies Beecher, 90, of Waterloo, died Aug. 25, after a brief illness at home with her loving husband and family by her side.
She was born on April 15, 1923, in Bellevue, to Arthur and Florence Keil Kies. On October 28, 1944, she married Bernard J. "Barney" Beecher in Waterloo. Mary and Barney were blessed with 12 children, 26 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.
Mary attended Clarke University, Dubuque, and Rosary College, River Forest, Illinois. She worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing in the Chem Lab during World War II, was a member of the Covenant Hospital Auxiliary, St. Edward's Rosary Society, P.E.O. Chapter MR, and Sunnyside Country Club. She served as a Girl Scout Brownie troop leader and Cub Scout den mother, enjoyed bowling and Bridge Club, and was an avid reader and, later, an audio-book fan when her sight declined from macular degeneration. After retirement, she and Barney traveled to Europe and spent winters at their home in Sun City West, Arizona.
Surviving are her husband of 69 years, their children and spouses (Waterloo, Iowa, unless noted): John (Mary Kay); Ann (Mike) Mulligan of Dubuque; Jane Scott; Bob; Sue (Jeff) Leech of Rock Island, Illinois; Joan Snyder of Dubuque; Gerry Beecher of Bradenton, Florida; Dick (Barbara) of Davie, Florida; Barb (Bruce) Lehnen; Jim (Lisa) of Lemont, Illinois; Jean (Greg) Horihan of Rockford, Illinois; and Joe of Charlotte, North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Geraldine (Bob) Acker.
She was grateful for the excellent care she received from her doctors, nurses, Cedar Valley Hospice, and the caregivers who were very special to her.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 at St. Edward's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church on Thursday.
