Newell went to college in the east and earned a ministerial degree. Nute was in the lumber business with Joel Burditt Crain. They owned one of the first sawmills in McLennan County, TX. It was located on the Brazos River.

Nute was a Baptist preacher.

He married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Johnson Cooper in Cass County, TX, on 7 Sep 1848.
