She was born on March 7, 1935, to the late Lonnie Beck and Annie Davis Beck.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her son, Kendrick Beck Johnson and wife Mitzy; three grandchildren, Maria Watson and husband, Josh, of Mount Airy, Sarah Hicks and husband, Garry, of Winston-Salem; and Kendra Johnson of Pilot Mountain; three great-grandchildren, Rylan Watson, Hayston Watson, and Adelyn Hicks; one sister, Rose Ann Bullington; two brothers, Rev. Ray Beck and wife, Carol, and Russell Beck and wife, Barbara, several nieces and nephews and many special friends.
She was a loved and respected teacher in the Surry County School system for 40 years; was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and an active member of the following educational organizations and clubs: Delta Kappa Gama, Long Hill Extension Club, Long Hill Senior Citizens, New Hope Senior's Bible Study, Pilot Mountain Garden Club. Mom loved flowers, her various collectables, working in her yard and helping others. She loved ACC basketball, especially the Big Four. Her favorite team was North Carolina Tarheels. Mom always instilled in Kendrick that he should put God first, family and friends second, and himself third.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husbands, Benny Ray Johnson and Roy Montgomery Tolbert; and a brother-in-law, Wendell Bullington.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 27, 2013 from 6:00– 8:00 P.M. at Cox-Needham Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at Cox-Needham Funeral Home with Rev. Ted Turman and Dr. Rick Smith officiating. Ms. Tolbert will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at New Hope United Methodist Church cemetery, Pilot Mountain, NC.
