David Edward Houston was born at the Presbyterian compound at Nanking, China on August 26,1894, the second son of missionary parents. In 1899, he came with his parents, Reverend and Mrs. Thomas W. Houston, to the United States. They resided for a short time in California and then moved to Kansas. David attended Lansing, Kansas high school for four years from 1909 to 1913 while his father was chaplain of the penitentiary. He was on the debate team, ran track, and in his junior year was quarterback for the football team, though it was not a successful year. His brother Paul wrote "that his interest in athletics waned as his interest in girls increased." Paul says he was "compact and muscled" and about 5'9" tall. David was a great reader and preferred books on history and politics, however, much to his mother's distress he chose not to follow family tradition and go to college. Instead he became engaged to Miss Clara Marshall of Kansas City and took a job with the Louisiana Texas Lumber Company in Ratcliff, Texas in order to save money for their marriage. David and Clara married in 1916. He took a job on the staff of a newspaper in Kansas City until America entered the World War. Both David and his brother Paul enlisted in the Aviation section of the Signal corps (there being no separate aviation branch of the army). David was sent to the Air Service Flying School at Kelly Field San Antonio, Texas and after training to fly the Curtiss Jenny JN-4D (the standard pilot trainer of WW1),he remained on as an instructor until the end of the war. After the war he was offered a high paying job in the Brazilian Topographical Service to take pictures of the Amazon. Clara balked at that idea, and in the fall of 1919 the family came to Moffat County, Colorado and settled in Axial basin. In 1922, David was elected clerk and recorder for Moffat County, and the family moved to Craig. He was in the process of publishing a book of his poetry and was a Democratic Candidate for County Commissioner for southern Moffat county when he died from a gunshot wound to his side while duck hunting on October 14, 1924. His gun discharged accidentally while he was climbing through a barbed wire fence. David and Clara had four daughters and one son, David Edward Houston, Jr. who died in France in World War ll.BurialHot Sulphur Springs Cemetery Grand CountyColorado, USA
