Virgil M. "Pete" Ashley, 85, of St. Joseph, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2013 at his home.

Pete was born on August 26, 1927 in St. Joseph to Charles and Zolah (Lane) Ashley.
He graduated from Lafayette High School in St. Joseph, and served in the United States Navy and Army. He later worked for Wire Rope Co. for 30 years until his retirement in 1993.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and he was known as the "River Rat". He was a charter member of the Missouri Big Buck Club and held the number 1 spot for the largest deer rack for 2 years in a row.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Martin Ashley, and nephew, Joe Miller.

Surviving family includes daughter, Kelly (Joe) Barber, of St. Joseph; companion and partner in crime, Mona Kurtz, of the home; grandson, Drew and granddaughter, Jillian "Papa's Varmints", sister, Charlene (Frank) Miller, Louisville, KY; and 3 nephews, Greg Ashley, Brad Ashley and Robert Miller.

Services 10:00 AM Tuesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, in St. Joseph.
Interment Bennett-Lane Cemetery, Savannah, Missouri.
