Henry Buddemeyer, his wife and 4 children left their home in Gartnisch, Halle, Westfalen, Prussia, and set sail for New Orleans aboard the Bark Alexander in October of 1840. After running into a storm, they were shipwrecked near Santo Domingo in what is now the Dominican Republic. Only one passenger was lost in the shipwreck, but all personal possessions went down with the ship. They were stranded there for almost 6 months before being picked up by another ship and taken to New York, arriving there in June 1841. While they were stranded, another child was born.
Eventually they made their way to Gasconade County, Missouri, where friends who had emigrated earlier, helped them get back on their feet. Two more children were born in Missouri. Henry purchased three 40 acre parcels of land from the U.S. Government, and farmed until his death in 1874.
