Alice C. Garnett died during a flood in downtown Rochester on June 18, 1946. Heavy rains caused an upstream dam to fail on Paint Creek and sent a torrent of water heading toward Rochester. The berm around the Western Knitting Mills dam gave way, unleashing the water of the Chapman Mill Pond on the east side of the village. Mrs. Garnett was swept off the porch of her home on East Third Street and drowned before she could be rescued. She was the only Rochester fatality of the flood.
