Gerald was born May 23, 1925, in Cortland, a son of the late Henry E. and Gladys M. (Riese)Breeds, and was a life-long southern Cayuga County resident.
In earlier years, Gerald had been a self-employed milk hauler, and afterward was employed as a machinist for Smith-Corona for 25 years. Throughout his life, he had also been a self-employed farmer. Gerald enjoyed reading, mowing his lawn and "puttering" with old cars and tractors. His greatest love was for his wife, children and all of his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth (Dellow) Breeds, who he married April 7, 1951; seven children: Steven (Jamie) Breeds of Locke, Sigrid (William Sr.) Parker of Locke, Cynthia (William) Compton of Moravia, Scott (Debra) Breeds of Groton, Sally (Peter) Compton of Locke, Stewart (Audrey) Breeds of Penn Yan and Shawn (Connie) Breeds of Poplar Ridge; 27 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; four sisters: Dora Jones of Little York, June Abbey of Homer, Charlene Hamilton of Locke and Betsey Hargett of Locke; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his two brothers, Douglas in 1961, and Lawrence in 2011.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Shurtleff Funeral Home, 103 Lincoln Ave., Groton, with the Rev. Jeffrey Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Homer West Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. or on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m., prior to services.
