William Rankin (1840-c1885) was a migrant from Ireland to the United States who worked shoeing horses. (b. September 26, 1840; Drumachose, Londonderry, Ireland - d. circa 1885; Manhattan; New York City, New York, USA)

Parents:
Mary and George Rankin.

Birth:
September 26, 1840 in Drumachose, Londonderry, Ireland.

Migration:
He appears to have arrived the United States on May 18, 1850 in New York City, New York arriving from Dublin, Ireland.

Marriage:
He married Mary A. Rafferty (1843-?) around 1865 in New York City.

Children:
George S. Rankin (1866-1943) who married Catherine Doyle (1869-1897) and after her death married Margaret Hogan (1872-?), and Joseph William Rankin (1876-1963) who married Ellen Veronica Meehan (1881-1955).

Occupation:
He worked as a farrier, shoeing horses.

Death:
Around 1885 in Manhattan, New York City, New York.

Research:
Researched and written by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) for Findagrave starting on August 23, 2013. Updated on November 30, 2018 with information from Dawn Beviano: "He did not pass in August of 1880. In the 1880 census the family is listed as residing at 541 E 24th st, NYC. William is found in the 1882 and 1884 city directories, same address, same occupation. In 1886, his wife, Mary Ann, is listed at the same address, as the widow of William. William died between 1884-1886. I am still working on the actual date. As for MaryAnn Rafferty . She was located in the 1900 census, as were Joseph, and George, and George's children. MaryAnn had remarried in 1894 to Thomas Whalen and residing at 336 W 25th St Manhatten. Both Joseph and George as listed as the stepsons and have the last name of Whalen. William, George's son, is also listed as Whalen. Whereas his daughters, Esther and my grandmother Mary, are listed as Rankin. MaryAnn died after 1900. In the 1905 NY state census George and the children are living with Joseph and his family. So I am guessing Maryann died between 1900-1905."
