OBITUARY
J. R. Conquest Dead
It is with sincere regret that we note the death of Ex-Judge Conquest, who died at Phillipsburg, Kansas, Wednesday morning, January 27, 1915. He had been sick for a couple of weeks and we recently noted that the papers of that town told of his severe illness.
More than 30 years a warm friendship had existed between the writer and Mr. Conquest. He was one of the most gentle of men and although we had for over 20 years differed in politics it never interfered with the warm friendship that had always existed between us since we first became acquainted.
Mr. Conquest as four years probate judge of this county and later four years county commissioner. In being of these positions he acquitted himself with honor and practically every man that knew him was his friend. He came to this country in an early day with his wife enduring the hardships and privations of pioneer life. He raised a large family, and was an exemplar citizen.
He was an old soldier and served three years in the union army during the civil war and was one of the most ? men in his company. He was a member of the T. E. G. Ransom ? of the G. A. R. in this city.
His funeral is being held today as we go to press. His burial being in Phillipsburg. "Good bye Riley, no more shall we enjoy your friendly hand shake and cordial greeting. May you rest in peace and receive the reward that comes to those who have lived uprightly and have done good to your fellow man." Oberlin Herald.
