She and Joseph Birl had 10 children whose names are known: Joseph Edgar, William David, Nancy Naomi (Nannie), Robert Leslie, Laura Iris, Lemuel Grover, Mary, Birl Milton, Oscar, and John. Three of these, Mary, Oscar and John, did not live long. In the 1900 census she says that she had 12 children and 7 were living. Two of her grandchildren (Joe Hight and Mary Elizabeth Horton Stribling) said that after their grandmother had had 12 children, she prayed not to have any more. Shortly afterward her husband died. They said that she was remorseful the rest of her life.
After her mother's death in 1884, her father married Lamisa F. Jordan Wood, the widow of her mother's brother, Johnson Whitsett Wood. The couple moved to McKinney, but after Joseph Birl Hight's death, her aunt/stepmother returned to Tennessee where many of her nine children by her first husband lived.
Three of Mary Jane's siblings, Rebecca Tennessee, John Lytle, and Robert C. also moved to Texas.
Mary Jane moved into McKinney where she supported her large family as a dressmaker. When her daughter, Laura Iris, died in 1910, her granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Horton, lived with her. Mary Elizabeth Horton Stripling attended Austin College and became a teacher. She was called from school when her grandmother was dying and was with her at the end.
