Verl M. Byerley, 93, died Monday, April 26, 2010, at Liberal Good Samaritan Center.
He was born Sept. 30, 1916, to Clay and Vernice (King) Byerley in Pratt County. He graduated from Liberal High School in 1935. He married Odessa Gafford in 1937. He later married Mary McAmis.
During World War II he worked in the ship yards in Portland, OR. Returning to Liberal he and his father owned and operated Rays Grill for many years. He was manager and cook at the Liberal County Club for eight years, also the Elks Lodge for six years. He bought Frank's Music Co, later Jet Vending, which he operated for ten years. He was self-employed for several years before retiring.
He was a member of the Trinity Faith Church.and of the Elks Lodge No. 1947 in Liberal.
He is survived by two sons, Clay Byerley and wife, Dorothy, Owasso, OK and Dean Byerley and wife, Sherry, Topeka; one sister, Mae Riney, Portland, OR.; two step-sons, Ron McAmis, Kansas City and Tom McAmis, Liberal; two step-brothers, Joe Meler and wife, Ann, Orcutt, CA and Jim Meler and wife, Virginia, Irving, TX; one step-sister, Alice Mae Yamada and husband, Kerry, San Luis Obispo, CA; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Miller Chapel with the Rev. Dee Estes presiding. Burial will be at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Cremation has already taken place.
