Thomas James "Bud" Bates was the son of James Isaiah and Sallie (Barnhill) Bates. He was born in Mississippi and was counted in his father's household in the 1840 census of Bedford County, Tennessee. Bud moved with his family to Bell County, Texas around 1851. There he married Nancy PareLee (Bigham). Bud joined Company D of the 18th Regiment of TX Volunteer Cavalry in Belton, Texas on 15 January 1862. He was a bugler. He died in Bonham, Texas while in Camp.
