Mr. Armstrong died Sunday, Oct. 31, at home. He was 86.
He was born Nov. 15, 1917, in Sunset, Texas, to William Powell and Mary (Hastey) Armstrong. He married Virginia Woolsey on Aug. 31, 1941, in a Baptist Church in Las Vegas, Nev. He served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force. After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked for the state of California for more than 17 years. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Veterans Association. He enjoyed woodworking and reading.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Armstrong of Nevada City; son, Michael D. Armstrong of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter, Susan Armstrong Winters of Nevada City; son-in-law, Brent Winters of Nevada City; grandsons Caleb and Jeremiah of Galveston, Texas, and Clark of Nevada City; granddaughters Cacey, Jennifer, Christy, Joy and Jill of Nevada City; and granddaughter-in-law, Beth of Galveston, Texas. He was preceded in death by his son, Joe Q. Armstrong Jr. in 2002.
