BOSTON, Feb. 6 (AP)—One man died and 94 persons were injured today in a flash fire that broke out in a four‐car subway train crowded with commuters bound for home.
Hundreds were choking and gasping 60 yards through a smoke‐filled tunnel to safety.
Hospital officials said that 11 of the injured were in serious condition as a result of the fire and smoke. The dead man was identified as Arthur Rotch, 74 years old, of Milton.
The fire, which occurred late this afternoon, at the peak of the city's rush hour, struck the lead car of a southbound train between the South Station and Broadway stops, according to a spokesman for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
