Charles Henry Suydam was the second child of William Suydam (1805/06-1840) and Sarah Halsey(b.1810).The Suydams were a very early American Dutch family that settled in New Amsterdam. One of Charles'Suydam ancesters married the daughter of Anthony Janse Van Salee, who was the son of the Dutch privateer turned pirate, Jan Janse Van Salee. Anthony married Grietje Reyniers, who is known as "the first prostitute of New York City" and thus added a lot of spice to this branch of the family tree--of their descendants, the men being very pleased with the prostitute and the women preferring the pirate.
Charles' sisters were Sarah Louisa (b.1829), Rebecca Jane (b. 1834; m. 7-3-1856 Edward King), and Amelia Elizabeth (b.1837). Some time after his father's death, Charles went to live with his mother's sister Lucy and her husband Chester Francis in Hartford, Conn. Charles was trained as a cabinet maker.
Charles moved to Kansas Territory about 1858 and married Eliza M. Kinney on 4-14-1859 at White Church, Wyandotte Co., KS at the home of Eliza's sister, Mrs. Mary Kinney McMillin. During the Civil War, Charles was a private in the 23rd Regiment, Kansas State Militia. After Eliza's death in 1869, Charles moved to Texas, taking his oldest son, William, with him. William(b.4-30-1860;d.7-23-1944) grew up there and married there. His other two children-- Zula(b.3-22-1862) and Edward(b. 12-4-1864)-- remained with their Aunt Sara Kinney in Leavenworth, KS. Later in his life Charles returned to Wyandote, Kansas. He died in Leavenworth, KS. He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetary alongside his wife, Eliza.
Charles is the maternal grandfather of Thomas Watson. Houston
