According to her birth and 1939 marriage certificates, Carmelita's parents' names were Henry Black, born in Illinois, and Lillian Dickinson, born in Tennessee. According to her death certificate, Carmelita was divorced from her third husband, whose surname was Cortez. She was predeceased by her first two former husbands, Charles T. Schaeffer, whom she married on 8 July 1932 in Santa Ana, Calif., and Lucius W. Lomax, Jr., whom she married on 13 Jan. 1939 in Santa Barbara, Calif.
