Obituary

David J. Stevens, a long time resident of the San Gabriel Valley for the past 87 years, passed away on Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, in Rosemead, California.

He was born in Alhambra, California, in April 1924 to Martha Helen and Maurice Hoyt Stevens. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his first wife Frances Ridgway, his wife Ruth Eleanor Holman, and his one brother, Maurice Hoyt Stevens, Jr.

He was married to Frances M. Ridgway in November 1946 and widowed in November 1969. He then married, Ruth E. Holman in December 1972 and was again widowed in March 2000.

He is a graduate of South Gate High School and attended one year of Compton Junior College before enlisting in the Army Air Corp during WW II. Upon his return home, Dave began working for the Huntington Park Signal, where he met his first wife, Frances. He then took a job as a Radio Disc Jockey in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1946 to 1948 for radio station KOAT. After the arrival of his twins, David Jr. and Denise, Dave and his family returned to California where he began a career in the newspaper business, working for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and for the Los Angeles Times Mirror Corp., where he retired in 1989 as the Circulation Sales Manager.

He is survived by his children, Mr. David J. Stevens, Jr., of Oakhurst, CA, his daughter, Mrs. Denise J. Clements and son-in-law, Ronald of Boulder City, NV, and his step-son, Mr. Randall E. Holman and daughter-in-law, Loraine of Cypress, CA. He has 4 grandchildren, Mr. Keith A. Clements of Knoxville, TN, Mr. Craig L. Clements of Los Angeles, CA, Mr. Todd D. Holman of Lake Tahoe, CA, and Miss Kelsie M. Holman of Cypress, CA. He also has two great-granddaughters, Sydney and Jenna Clements, and many nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service for immediate family members was held on Thursday, November 3, 2011, at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, CA.

"Dave" loved people, had a great sense of humor and loved the history of Los Angeles County and the San Gabriel Valley. He was known for his entertaining and historical story telling of the town he resided in and loved for all of his 87 plus years. He will be missed by his family and many friends.
