Born in Morganton, North Carolina, he was a popular character actor making his big screen debut in "The Vengeance of Winona" (1914), and his Broadway debut in the stage comedy "Abie's Irish Rose" (1922). He appeared in five films before landing his first leading role in Frank Capra's "Platinum Blonde" (1931), distributed by Columbia Pictures. Four days after the premiere of "Platinum Blonde," he died at age 37 in Hollywood, California.
