Services for the Rev. Samuel L. Besecker, 78, of 6322 Quail Circle, Fayetteville, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 44 E. Main St., Fayetteville. He died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997 in Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md.

Born Jan. 23, 1919 in Hamilton Township, Franklin County, he was a son of the late Horace M. and Cora Coble Besecker.

The pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Greenvillage, Chambersburg, the Rev. Besecker was a 1936 graduate of Chambersburg High School, a 1941 graduate of Gettysburg College and a 1944 graduate of the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg.

His first ministerial assignments included Resurrection Lutheran Church, Franklin Park, Ill.; Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wilmington, Del.; and Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Gaithersburg, Ma.

He was one of the first Lutheran pastors to receive a sabbatical, which he served at the Ecumenical Institute of Bossey, Switzerland, in 1965. He later served sabbaticals with a river parish in Guyana, South America, in 1970 and at India vellore Medical College and Hospital in 1978.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Marian M. Mull Besecker; two daughters, Judith B. Rudolf of Waldorf, Md., and Marilyn J. Kuray of North Potomac, Md.; one son, Peter D. of Wilmington, Del.; two sisters, Frances Sites and Helen Showalter, both of Chambersburg; and one brother, Horace M. of Lexington, Mass.

He was preceded in death by one son, Paul L. Besecker, who died Aug. 17, 1976.

Burial will be in Coble Cemetery, St. Thomas.
