Samantha's mother died when Samantha was very young. By age six weeks, she was living with her grandparents Ansel and Rutha Tipton Bailey. William Stanley, Samantha's father, carried her to Ansel and Rutha's house and told them that Elizabeth Jane was dead. Rutha was nursing her son William T. and took the child and raised her. She married Jefferson Davis Cox the old syrup (Molasses Maker) so Loretta Bailey Long, who tells the following story about him. "When someone expressed their dislike for him they would say that he ate 'possum snouts' and was really fond of them."

Jefferson and Samantha reportedly moved to Knoxville in the 1890's. Jeff worked for Proctor Mfg. Company in Knoxville. They lived in the Sevier-Proctor subdivision near Chilhowee Park in Knoxville.
