After many months of digging and searching for the truth about who was the husband of Mary Ann Crawford and Caroline's father, my fellow researcher and cousin, Birt Fraser, and I believe we have partially cracked the code.
We have known all along that his last name was HOUSTON, but family legend has led us astray, as is often the case. Somewhere back down the line, 'someone' said, " I think his name was Wilson, or something like that". It was also believed that he was related somehow to the great Texas statesman, General Sam Houston. That remains to be proven.
Birt and I collaborated, dug, searched, scratched and clawed our way to the truth. We knew that Mr. Houston came to Texas from Tennessee, leaving his wife and infant daughter, Caroline in about 1836 or 1837. We also knew that he supposedly died fighting Indians. Where and why? We couldn't figure that out. But...one thing led to another in our search. We discovered that in the BATTLE OF THE SURVEYORS (vs. the Kickapoo), a Mr. "A. Houston" was killed. The time period seemed right and the area, east Texas, also made sense, since this is where Mary Ann, Caroline, and Mary Ann's parents - Joseph and Polly Crawford all came, following Mr. Houston to Texas. So, after researching Texas history, the Texas Rangers, reading about different battles they fought against the Indians in settling Texas, etc. we ran across the story of this battle. It isn't hearsay, it's from the words of several men who were actual survivors. We also found photos of a monument located at the site of the actual battle, with all the men's names inscribed. This is where the men are buried in a common grave.

Now, all that's left is to discover what the "A." stands for in his first name, and to find Mr. Houston's parents, etc.
Rest in peace, Mr. Houston...(my GGGG Grandfather).

Location is on the west side of Hwy 31 about a little ways north of Dawson, Dawson is about 5 miles N. of Hubbard.
Hubbard use to be in Navarro Co. now in Hill Co.
