ELK HORN - Adolph Julius Breining, son of Thomas and Marie (Winther) Breining, was born June
3, 1909 on a farm near Viola Center. He died Dec. 11, 1998 at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn
at age 89 years, 6 months and 8 days.

Adolph attended country school north of Kimballton and then attended Danebord College in Tyler,
MN where he met Celma Rignor Rasmussen. After school they returned to the Kimballton area where
he worked for Celma's father for a year.

June 7, 1931 Adolph and Celma were united in marriage at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in
Kimballton. They farmed west of Kimballton for seven years then moved to Jackson, MN where they
farmed for another five years. They then moved to a farm east of Irwin where they made their home
for 29 years. Along with farming, he worked for many years in the Irwin Sales Barn until it closed. In
1973 they retired from farming and moved to Elk Horn. He then worked at the Elk Horn Gas and
Fertilizer Company. Adolph was well known in the area for showing his team of ponies and wagon in
parades and giving rides to anyone in the community on any and all occasions.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife Celma, three brothers, Earl,
Lawrence and Robert; and one granddaughter Cynthia Hope Westfall. He is survived by his children,
Velma “Tootie” Book of Portland, OR, Verlee (Ed) Logue of Ft. Scott, KS and James Breining
(Barbara) of Des Moines; eight grandchildren, Dale Sorensen, Randy Sorensen, Laurie Uehling,
Scott Sorensen, Kendall Logue, Dawn Breining, Wendy Mackey and Kara Breining; 11 great
grandchildren, Corrina and Aleta Westfall, Amber and Tonya Sorensen, Kassie, Miranda, Cody,
Kendra, Alexandra, Savannah Sorensen, Crystal Kuhns, Jeffifer (?) Breaux and Kimberly Sorensen;
nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Dec. 16, 1998 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton with
Rev. Dr. Klaus Raab and Rev. Stephen Gronseth officiating. Burial was in the Immanuel Cemetery in
Kimballton with Mike Mackey, Ronnie Breining, Mike Uehling, Randy Sorensen, Kendall Logue and
Scott Sorensen casket bearers. Pauley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
