George was the only child of Leroy Howard and Mary Ellen Hitchings. George was less than 2 years old when Mary Ellen died of "decline". George first married Frances Jane Brown in 1876, but the marriage ended in 1883. (George & Fannie had one child together, George Leroy Howard.) George then married Ella Grant Firmin and together they had three children: Jennie, Clarence and Holly. (Only Clarence survived to adulthood.) George was a shoemaker most of his life, but retired about 1915 and moved to New Hampshire to try farming. Sadly, he died of cerebral hemorrhage less than a year later.
