George Pitt Beers was born in 1883 in Emporia, Florida, the youngest son of a Civil War veteran and pioneer citrus grower, John Leonard Beers and his wife Kate Zacharias Beers. He was orphaned while a young teenager and completed his high school education at the age of 15 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, not far from where his father was reared. He earned all his degrees at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York: a B.A., B.D., and M.A. That university later awarded him a Doctor of Divinity degree.

He subsequently held pastorates in Utica, New York; Baltimore, Maryland; Springfield, Massachusetts; and Patterson, New Jersey. While in Patterson, he became Executive Secretary, in 1934, of the American Baptist Home Mission Society. He served in that position for more than 18 years
