Italian Hall victim.
He was the son of Abraham Ala and Maria Karinini. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1887 and married Anna Hirtita on January 21, 1893. The couple had seven children: Raino (1894-), William (1896-), George (1897-), Allie (1898-1973), Norman (1900-), Rupert (1904-1968), and Irene (1909-1983). Anna died in 1910. Herman was trapped on the Italian Hall staircase with his daughter Irene. Although he lost his own life, he was able to save young Irene; her arm was badly broken. The Ala family is included in the 1910 census for Osceola under the surname Ellen; Anna's name is given as Felice.
