About 1837 he came to America and located in Dubuque, Ia., where he engaged in mining and smelting for many years. He also carried on farming. He died in 1866 at the age of fifty-seven. His wife passed away in 1871 at the age of sixty-one. In the family were ten children, Thomas Simpson, the Minnesota pioneer surveyor, being one of the number.
