Marit Olsdatter, the fifth child of Ingri Torgersdatter Haugen and second child of Ole Nielsen, was born 10 Dec 1835, at Lien under Huskelien (61.56640, 9.63336, now called Øverlia) in Kvikne, Nord-Fron, Oppland County, Norway. Marit was baptized at the Kvikne church in Nord-Fron 26 Dec 1835, with godparents Marit Øiumshoug, Mari Hardengen, Mari Hardengen, Hans Lien, and Jacob Lien. Marit was confirmed 13 Jun 1852, at the Sødorp church in Nord-Fron (confirmations are often not at the person's usual church). She was rated somewhat good in her religious knowledge, with the notation "has gone 2 years to prepare for confirmation, and in the first year showed good diligence." She is said not to be vaccinated.

On 8 Sep 1854, Marit Olsdatter married Hans Engebretsen Steendalen in Nord-Fron, with witnesses Iver Heggerud and John Braget. Their three children were Johan Hansen (born 26 Feb 1855), Julia Hansdatter (born 10 May 1857), and Hans Hansen (3 Oct 1859 to 26 Jan 1860). The third child was born after Marit's husband, Hans, drowned in Gudbrandsdalslågen (Sør-Fron, Oppland) 26 Jul 1859. At the time her third child was baptized (6 Nov 1859), Marit lived at Lillevolden (61.46312, 9.44777, now called Veslevollen) under Nordre Sylte, in Espedalen. Perhaps Marit had lived at Lillevolden since her marriage, since it was within walking distance of the Espedalen nickel works, where her husband was employed (Johan's confirmation record says he was born in Espedalen).

On the 1865 census, Marit lived at Lillevolden with her parents, two children, and a nephew. On 15 Jan 1867, Marit had a son, Hans Mortensen, with Morten Hansen Botten. On about 24 Jun 1870, Marit sailed from Oslo to Quebec on the brig Kong Carl with her parents, her three children, her nephew, and her oldest half-sister, Rønnaug Jacobsdatter Smikop, and Rønnaug's seven youngest children (15 people in these two families). After their arrival at Quebec, about 28 Aug 1870, it appears that the seven from Lillevolden went to the area of Prairie Farm, Barron County, Wisconsin.

On 26 Mar 1876, Marit married John Hanson (transcribed as "Johannes Hanso Fjerdinggreen") in Dunn County, Wisconsin (Prairie Farm is in Barron County near Dunn County). John's brother Knudt was married to Marit's sister Kari. On the 1880 US census, John and Marit Hansen live in Prairie Farm twp, Barron County, Wisconsin, with her son Hans and an "Ole Nilsen," likely her father. Marit's mother, Ingri, died about 28 Aug 1879 in Prairie Farm twp, listed on the 1880 mortality schedule in household 14, the same as John and Marit. The second household above them is Marit's half-sister Anne (Hansdatter), her husband, Ingebret Olsen, and their two youngest surviving children. The households immediately before and after John and Marit are Anne Hansdatter's two oldest children (Iver and Ole Ingebretsen) and their families.

The 1900 US census lists John and Marit Hanson in Vance Creek twp (the twp west of Prairie Farm twp). They are said to have been married 24 years. Marit is said to have had five children, two of whom are living. Since Marit is only known to have had four children in Norway, she and John may have had a child together. A grave stone possibly for Marit's mother, Ingri, includes a "Herman Hanson (1877-1877)," but no record has been found confirming whose child he is.

Marit died 10 Feb 1918 and is buried in Akers Cemetery, rural Prairie Farm, Dunn County, Wisconsin.
