THOMAS CARTER STEELE
Thomas C. Steele was born in 1838 at Spring Hill, Johnson County, Arkansas the ninth child of thirteen children of John Steele and Elizabeth (Ray) Steele.

He was united in marriage to Mary Jane Blaylock on September 21, 1857 at her parents home in Franklin County, Arkansas.

At age twenty three Thomas left his farm, his wife and three small children at Ozark, Arkansas and on October- 31, 1861 joined at Camp Sevier, Arkansas, Captain Ramsaur's Company 1 Mounted Regiment Arkansas Volunteers also known as Company D. 1 Regiment Arkansas Mounted Rifles.

He served under Captain Gibbs and went to Cornith, Mississippi by order of General Van Dorn and was with Captain Campbell's Company until June 1862.

In July Thomas was reported 'sick East of the Mississippi River' and hospitalized at Chattanooga, Tennessee for two months. From November 1862 to February 1863 he was absent from his Company, Detailed in the hospital at Mierfreesboro, ______________ He was paid for services rendered there and was offered fifty dollars (bounty) to stay in the Armed Services, which he did.

The next two months Thomas was with Company D. 1 Regiment Arkansas Mounted Rifles until captured at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia on September 19, 1863, and taken prisoner the next day. He was Fore warded to Military Prison, Louisville, Kentucky September 30, 1863, for exchange, released October 2, 1863, to be transferred to Camp Douglas, Military Prison, Chicago, Illinois. There he was held, Prisoner of War until discharged, June 20, 1865.

Thomas suffered greatly while in prison. The scarcity of food, extreme cold, and lack of sanitation caused his health to break. He told him he had hidden a twenty-dollar bill during his prison time by hiding it in his rectum during prison searches. The prisoners were not allowed a warming fire, under penalty of death. A prisoner - suffering from the cold made a fire and was immediately shot.

When Thomas was discharged he returned to Franklin County and his family. His little daughter, Alice, had died in 1862. Two months after his homecoming, five-year-old Mary Elizabeth died. In the next eleven years, seven more children were born to Thomas and Mary. Ella and Francis died in early childhood.

In the spring of 1877 Thomas, with his wife and six children, Sarah Ann, William Edwin. Emily Luella, Martha Jane, Naomi, and Lillian Mae, packed up and joined a small wagon train headed for Oregon. The trip took six months. The family arrived in the John Day Valley in Grant County, The first snow was falling.

April 30, 1878, at age forty years, Thomas Carter Steele died of TB which he contracted while a prisoner of war, He was buried near Prairie City, Grant County, Oregon. Mary died in September 1880.

The five Steele daughters married and raised families: Sarah, Andrew J. Callaway: Emily, John M. Knox; Martha, Charles E. Amidon; Naomi, George A. Wright, and Lillian, James A. Walter. William never married. The Steeles have numerous descendants living In Oregon, Idaho, and Washington State.
