Eliza Virginia Scott
Helen A. Scott
Albert W. Scott
Sophia Scott
Godfrey Brower Scott
Minnesota Scott
Dolph Brower Scott was my great, great, great Grandfather. According to oral family history, he was an overseer and was murdered by a slave. Scott, his wife, Mary Jane, and their first child, Eliza Virginia, came to Cabell County from Mississippi prior to the birth of their second child, Helen, in May of 1850.
The following account was written by Scott's granddaughter: "My great grandfather (Brower Scott) was murdered in Virginia on his way home from a slave sale where he bought a "mammy" slave and baby. The horses took her (the slave) on to his house. A neighbor (on his deathbed) finally admitted to killing him over a dispute of a fence line in a field." MZW
A photo of the grave marker is at www.rootsweb.com/~wvcabell/cemetery/scott.html
There are said to be several stories as to the events surrounding Scott's death, some of which are contained in the book "Cabell County Cemetery Inscriptions" by Carrie Eldridge. If anyone has access to a copy of this book, I would like very much to hear from you.
