Enlisted 7/22/1861 at Charlottesville, VA., he was mustered into Captain John Bankhead Magruder's Company "Rivanna Guards" as a Private.
Present on all Rolls until detailed 2/20/1862 in Suffolk, VA.
Promoted 5/20/1862 to 5th Sergeant.
Absent, sick, thyphoid fever 6/27/1862 at Camp Drewry, Richmond, VA.; admitted into Chimborazo Hospital #2, Richmond; transferred 7/30/1862 to C.S.A. Hospital, Danville, VA.; returned to duty 8/8/1862.
Present on all Rolls from Nov & Dec 1862 Roll until listed as Missing In Action, 7/3/1863, Gettysburg PA.; POW 7/3/1863; confined 7/6/1863 Fort McHenry, MD.; transferred to Fort Delaware, DE., arriving 7/7/1863; paroled and released there 6/19/1865.

The 57th Infantry Regiment was organized in September, 1861, by adding five independent companies to the five companies of E.F. Keen's Battalion. Some of the men were from Powhatan, Pittsylvania, and Botetourt counties.
