Services were Saturday at the Wickenburg Community Center for David E. Carter, 65, of Wickenburg who died Mar. 28 in Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital in Sun City West.

Dr. A.B. (Bert) Follmar of Calvary Baptist Church officiated, with burial following in the Wickenburg Cemetery.

Mr. Carter retired in 1988 as the chief deputy of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. An honor guard from the MCSO was present at the Saturday services, and an estimated 500 persons attended the Ceremonies.

Mr. Carter was born July 30, 1924 in Malvern, Ark. He was a longtime Wickenburg resident and a graduate of Wickenburg High School.

He began his career with the sheriff's office in 1957, and rose through the ranks under five sheriffs to become the county's highest non-elected officer in the department, retiring in December 1988 after 32 years of service.

He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.
He received numerous citations from civic groups and commendations from the sheriff's office during his career, including the county's Distinguished Service Medal in 1988.

He was a Marine Corp veteran of World War II.

Mr. Carter was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou, of Wickenburg; a son, David E. Carter, Jr. of Lake Oswego, Ore.; two daughters, Davida Russell of Selmer, Tenn., and Barbara Newton of Glendale; a sister, Mary Hancher of Vista, Calif.; two brothers, James Carter of Kingman and Morris Carter of Escondido, Calif.; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
